Great news CASA friends! The Impact 100 philanthropy has selected CASA as one of only a few organizations to move to the site visit stage of its funding process. What does that mean? It means that CASA is one step closer in the very competitive process created by Impact 100. This organization, founded and run by women who each give $1,000, will make two $100,000 grants in June 2013. Two organizations out of over 100 applicants will be selected based on these site visits and the vote of members of the Impact 100 organization.

Today, I want to thank the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County and Ms. Melissa Dubois, a student at Drexel University, for their generosity to CASA. On Sunday March 10, 2013, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County dedicated half of its Sunday worship service collections to CASA at both the 9:15 and 11:15 services. I was honored to speak about CASA and our mission at the 11:15 service. The church’s mission covenant is: “As members of a welcoming, religiously liberal community, we care deeply about each other, our children, our neighbors and our Earth.

CASA volunteers were treated to a New Year’s “State of CASA” Town Hall meeting on February 19, 2013. CASA holds these meetings several times a year as a way of keeping our volunteers informed about CASA’s accomplishments, goals and challenges as an organization. The Town Hall also provides a great opportunity for CASA staff to seek feedback from our volunteers that is used as part of CASA’s strategic planning and program development efforts.

CASA volunteer advocates recently learned about two new state laws that will help teens in foster care as they plan to leave “the system”. Jenny Pokempner of the Juvenile Law Center (http://www.jlc.org/) helped us understand how we can help our teens through this challenging time. “Coming of age” isn’t easy for any young person. Youth in foster care face this time of life without many of the supports that we often take for granted. For example, parents are not available to provide health care coverage, a place to live or financial help.

Our 20th Anniversary year, 2012, was a great year for CASA! 179 children had the benefit of a CASA volunteer by their side to advocate in their best interest in court. That’s a 17% increase over a period of three years. Still, there are over 725 dependent children in Delaware County who do not have a CASA to advocate for them. We are working hard to reduce that number. During 2012, we trained 29 new volunteers who will now be able to advocate for more children. We also closed 51 cases and accepted 49 new children for advocacy.
